Patron Saint of abandoned children and orphans. Jerome was commander of a fortress in Venice. The fortress was captured and he imprisoned. While in prison, he had a spiritual conversion. He escaped from prison, and became a priest. Saint Jerome spent the rest of his life caring for orphans, founding many orphanages and hospitals. He died in 1537 from illness while assisting plague victims.
