Rama Navami commemorates the birth of the Hindu god Rama, the
seventh incarnation of Vishnu. Rama is known for his defeat of the undefeatable
demon Ravana. Virtue, family commitment, moral living, and shunning worldly
processions are some of the values associated with this god. He is
traditionally pictured with a bow and arrow, indicating his vigilance in
fighting evil. Often he is pictured with his family, indicating his commitment
to family life.
On Rama Navami, the religious fast until noon in anticipation of
Ramas birth. At noon, Rama is born and the celebration begins with
singing, and dancing. On this day, figures of Rama, his wife Sita, his brother
Lakshmana, and his devotee Hanumana ride on special carts through the streets.
In some temples, offerings of fruit and buttermilk are made to this god.
The Ramayana is ancient epic about Ramas life. As part of
the Rama Navimi observance, parts of the Ramayana are often recited. |
