On Karthikai Deepam the Hindu god Lord
Shiva's victories over darkness are honored. A large beacon is lit on the holy
hill of Arunachala in southern India. Throughout southern India, bonfires are
lit in front of Hindu temples. Rows of lanterns illuminate the fronts of houses
on this night.
