The Torch festival is the most important festival of the Yi People
of China. To some the festival honors an ancient hero Sani, who killed a demon
on this day. Others believe the torches kill harmful insects, ensuring a good
harvest.
During the day, sporting events like archery, wrestling, bull
fighting, and horse racing are held. In the evening, each household is lit by a
torch. The villagers will also create a giant torch or bonfire. Processions of
torchbearers will walk through fields to drive insects away. |
