Yi Torch Festival
Also known as Festival of Stars (ancient)
Observed Month 6, Day 24 (Chinese Lunar Calendar)

Torch Festival BonfireThe Torch festival is the most important festival of the Yi People of China. To some the festival honors an ancient hero Sani, who killed a demon on this day. Others believe the torches kill harmful insects, ensuring a good harvest.

During the day, sporting events like archery, wrestling, bull fighting, and horse racing are held. In the evening, each household is lit by a torch. The villagers will also create a giant torch or bonfire. Processions of torchbearers will walk through fields to drive insects away.

Note: This holiday is one of Calendar Mine's over 500 built-in observances. Dates for the above holiday are calculated accurately for any location on the globe.
