Water Splashing Festival
Observed Month 6, Day 25 (Chinese Lunar Calendar)

The Water Splashing Festival is a major cultural festival of the Chinese Dia People. The splashing of water symbolizes the cleansing of evil and the rinsing away of misfortune.

The festival has its origins in Dia folklore. There was once an evil demon who ruled the land. No one could defeat him because he was so powerful. The demon had seven wives. One of the wives found out that wrapping its hair around its throat could kill the demon. The seven wives killed the demon. Every time the dead demon's head touched the ground a fire started. The wives took turns holding the demon's head above the ground. When each wife's turn was over, the other wives splashed her with water to rinse off the evil demon's blood. Today the splashing of water symbolizes this cleansing, and helps ensure prosperity for all festival participants.
