The Sending Off the Winter Clothes is a traditional Chinese
holiday on which one's ancestors are remembered and honored. It is one of three
traditional Chinese holidays in which graves are visited and cleaned. The other
two are the Double-Ninth Festival, and the
Pure and Brightness Festival.
Before the holiday, warm winter clothing is prepared as gifts
for the ancestors. Typically miniature paper replicas of clothing are used. The
clothing is placed in fancy gift boxes and displayed in the household.
Imitation paper money may also be added to the gift boxes. On the day of the
holiday, the gifts are burned, sending them to the ancestors. The burning
ceremony is usually performed outside the house, or at the gravesite. |
