National Day in China marks the anniversary of the victory of
Chinese Communist forces in 1949, and the formation of the People's Republic of
China. It is a 2 day legal holiday in the People's Republic of China, being
observed on October 1st, and October 2nd.
Shortly after the end of the WWII in 1945, a civil war broke out
in China between the Communist Party led by Mao Zedong, and the Nationalist
Party led by Chiang Kia-shek. On October 1, 1949 Mao's Zedong's Communist
forces defeated the Nationalists. Chiang Kia-shek and his remaining followers
were banished from mainland China. The victorious Communist then formed the
People's Republic of China, with Mao Zedong as its first leader. |
