Nadam is an ancient festival in which Mongolians gather to
compete in sporting events. The festival consists of competitions in the "three
manly" Mongolian sports: horseback riding, archery, and wrestling.
In ancient times, Mongolian tribes would gather on Nadam.
Cheiftains would negotiate treaties, and trade would be conducted. Disputes
between tribes were settled by athletic competitions.
In Mongolia, the observance of Nadam is held on July 11th, the
anniversary of the Mongolian Revolution of 1921. In Inner Mongolia (part of the
in the People's Republic of China), the festival is held on July 20th.
