Republic Day
Also known as Double Tenth, Shuang-Shih
Observed October 10

Double Tenth, Shaung Shih, or Republic Day commemorates the start of the revolution led by Sun Yat-sen which resulted in the formation of the Republic of China. It is a national holiday in Taiwan.

In the first years of the twentieth century, China had the appearance of an occupied nation. Foreign troops from a dozen nations were stationed within the country. The Chi'ng Dynasty which had ruled China since 1644, appeared to be weak and cowering to foreigners. On October 2, 1911 Sun Yat-sen lead a populace army against the Imperial Government. The revolutionaries were no match for the Imperial Army. However, a key Imperial Army General, Yuan Shikai defected, giving the revolutionaries victory. The Emperor soon abdicated, and the Republic of China was formed by proclamation on January 1, 1912.
