Birthday of Zuantian Shagdi, Lord of Dark Heaven
Also known as Double Third, Bok Kai Festival, Bomb Festival
Observed Month 3, Day 3 (Chinese Lunar Calendar)

Bomb Festival Fireworks Zuantian Shagdi, the Lord of Dark Heaven, is the god who has power over water, rains, and flooding. He is also known as the Dark North God, Lord of Black Heaven, and Bok Eye. This observance is sometimes called the Bomb Festival, because loud fireworks are used to celebrate this day.

Chinese cities in wet areas, or on rivers may have temples dedicated to the Lord of Dark Heaven. Services and festivals are held in his honor to protect the city from flooding. The largest such festival in North America is called the Bok Kai Festival, and is held each year in Maryville, California. Chinese immigrants started the festival in 1865. The area had experienced several floods. The immigrants hoped to protect the city from future flooding.

Note: This holiday is one of Calendar Mine's over 500 built-in observances. Dates for the above holiday are calculated accurately for any location on the globe.
