Mother's Day
Observed Second Sunday in May

Mother and ChildMother's Day is a day dedicated to honoring one's mother. It is customary to give one's mother a card, flowers, or a gift. On this day, children will serve their mothers breakfast in bed. The day is typically spent with mother and children doing something they enjoy. It is one of the busiest days of the year for restaurants, as many observers will take their mothers out to dinner.

It has become customary to wear a carnation on Mother's day. A colored one if your mother is alive. A white one if she is dead.

In 1872, Julia Ward Howe suggested that a holiday be held honoring mothers. In 1910, the governor off West Virginia proclaimed the second Sunday in May as Mother's Day. Within a few years, all states had adopted the holiday. In 1914, Woodrow Wilson declared it a national observance.

Note: This holiday is one of Calendar Mine's over 500 built-in observances.
