Flag Day is an observance
honoring the flag of the United States. On this day, it is customary to fly the
flag on government offices, businesses, and private homes. Businesses typically
remain open on Flag Day.
Flag Day represents the anniversary of the first American Flag,
adopted by congress on June 14, 1777. The original US flag contained 13 stars,
and 13 stripes, one for each of the original 13 American colonies. It was sewn
by Betsy Ross of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
The first official Flag Day celebration was in Philadelphia in
1893. Flag Day was proclaimed an Annual National Celebration by Woodrow Wilson
in 1916. June 14 was officially recognized as Flag Day by President Harry
Truman in 1949. The date of its observance has to be re-established every year
by Presidential Proclamation. |
