Federal Income Taxes Due
Also known as Tax Day
Observed April 15

US Flag and Dollar SignBy Tax Day, April 15, American citizens are required to file individual federal tax returns, and to pay any tax balance due to the federal government. Most states and localities, which collect income tax, also use this date as a deadline for tax return filing and payment. If April 15 is on a Sunday, then Tax Day will fall on the following Monday April 16.

The first income tax in the United Sates was levied by Abraham Lincoln to finance the Civil War. In 1872, it was repealed by congress. In 1894, congress tried to re-instantiate the federal income tax but it was found to be unconstitutional by the Supreme Court. In 1913, the 13th amendment, giving the federal government the right to levy income tax, was ratified. Initially, Federal Incomes Taxes were due by March 1.
