Father's Day is a holiday
where fathers are honored. On this day, it is customary for children to give
Father's Day cards or gifts to their father. Children will typically spend the
day with their father doing things they all enjoy. Father's Day is one of the
most observed holidays in the US.
The Father's Day observance is generally attributed to Mrs.
Bruce John Dodd of Spokane Washington. After hearing a
Mother's Day service, she decided there
should be a similar holiday for Fathers. She convinced a local Minster to hold
a special Father's Day service on June 19, 1909. In 1910, Father's Day became a
state observance in Washington, observed on the third Sunday in June. In 1924,
President Harding proclaimed it a national event, "to establish more
intimate relations between fathers and their children and to impress upon
fathers the full measure of their obligations".
In 1972, President Richard Nixon made Father's Day a national
observance. |
